Bison Rut = Bear Frequenting Area:
Every year several bison die during the rut (August and into September) from injuries due to competitive fighting. These carcasses attract bears to the area. Anyone hiking into Hayden Valley, Pelican Valley, Lamar Valley, and any other area where bison congregate should be extra alert for bear activity and avoid injured or dead bison. Other precautions to take while hiking in bear country:
• Be alert for bears
• Make noise
• Carry bear spray & know how to use it
• Avoid hiking alone
• Do not run if you have a surprise encounter with a bear
